Academic and clinical journey

I graduated from high school with honors and began my medical education at Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1990.

On 31.7.1996, I graduated seventh in my class and earned the right to begin specialty training at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology through the Medical Specialty Examination.

During my residency, I established the electrophysiology laboratory within Erciyes University and prepared my thesis in this field.

In 2002, the title of my thesis was “Evaluation of ganglion cell layer and macular functions in myopic patients using the pattern electroretinography method.”

After completing my specialization, I continued working at Erciyes University as a lecturer.

I carried out my work in medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery, and ocular electrophysiology.

To further improve my experience in retina, I worked for three months in 2003 at the Retina Unit of Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA).

To further expand my knowledge and experience in retinal diseases, I worked as an observer in 2006 under Prof. Anita Leys at the Ophthalmology Department of Katholic University of Leuven in Belgium.

Scientific Studies

01

In 2008, I passed the associate professorship examination and received the title of Associate Professor. In the same year, I passed the European Board of Ophthalmology examination and received the “Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology-FEBO” title.

02

After receiving the title of Professor in 2013, I served as Professor at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology until 2019. During this period, I supervised seven residency theses and held many administrative duties.

03

During my university years, I continued working in medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and ocular electrophysiology.

04

I also passed the Turkish Ophthalmology qualification examination and received the qualification certificate in 2012.

05

After the Betül Ziya Eren Genome and Stem Cell Research Center (GEN-KÖK) was established within Erciyes University, stem cell applications in retinal and optic nerve diseases became a special field of interest for me.

06

The results of the Phase 1 study I started in 2013 were published in 2016. Öner A, Gönen ZB, Sinim N, Çetin M, Özkul Y. Subretinal adipose-tissue derived mesenchymal stem cell implantation in advanced stage retinitis pigmentosa: A Phase I clinical safety study. Stem Cell Research and Therapy, 2016;7:178.

07

As of 2026, this publication has received 120 citations.

08

In 2015, I was selected by the Turkish Ophthalmological Association (TOD) as the “SOE lecturer” among many applicants and presented my lecture titled “Stem Cell Therapies in Retinal Degenerations.”

09

I later conducted Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies on stem cell applications in retinal and optic nerve diseases and published their results.

10

I participated in many meetings with the Ministry of Health on stem cell therapies and contributed to the implementation of these applications in Turkey.

11

In September 2019, I voluntarily left my university position and began working within Acıbadem Healthcare Group.

12

In 2026, I began working at Ataköy Dünya Göz Hospital within Dünya Eye Hospitals. I continue to work there.

13

I completed my PhD in stem cells in January 2026 and became entitled to receive the PhD title.

14

As of 2026, I have 77 international publications and 68 national publications. These studies have received nearly 3,000 citations.

15

International presentations: 45, national presentations: 128.

17

I have been an invited speaker at more than 30 international congresses and more than 90 national congresses.

18

I have been married for 29 years and am the mother of two daughters.
